The term dress shoe is mostly used to define shoes that are not casual. That is such a broad definition that it can mean a lot of things to different people but, as a rule, if a shoe has a leather or suede upper and a leather sole, it is probably a men’s dress shoe. In the UK, we would have a different definition of a men's dress shoe, one that was specifically designed to go with very formal clothing or "dress", hence the name dress shoe. In this narrower definition, men’s dress shoes may be an all-patent black Oxford to go with a dinner suit or morning suit. It could however also apply to all men's formal shoes, such as a toe-cap Oxford, but always in black!
